About Zakat

Important information and tips.

What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the 5 pillars of Islam. Every Muslim who meets the Nisab threshold must give 2.5% of their zakatable wealth annually.

Hawl (One Lunar Year)

Zakat is only obligatory when assets have remained at or above the Nisab level for a full lunar year (354 days).

Gold vs Silver Nisab

The Gold Nisab (87.48g) is more commonly used. The Silver Nisab (612.36g) results in a lower threshold. Consult a scholar on which to follow.

Who Receives Zakat?

Zakat is distributed among 8 categories: the poor, the needy, Zakat collectors, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing captives, debtors, in the way of Allah, and travellers in need.
